Primary schools reopen today, as part of Boris Johnson’s ‘conditional plan’ for reopening the UK. But only those pupils in reception, year one, and year six will be heading into lessons.
However, year-six children at Herne Junior school will have to wait until Wednesday before they can go back to classes.
While the Government says schools across England can reopen, the head at Herne School, Tony Markham, says he wants to test the measures the school has put in place to minimise risks.
Children of key workers can continue to come in every day. Herne has been teaching 16 such children in recent weeks and, from this week, they’ll be split into four classrooms which they’ll need to enter from the playground side of the building.
If you’re a key worker with children at Herne, please drop them at the basketball playground from today.
And what have Herne Junior staff been doing while most children are home schooling? Well, they’ve made a song, recording their version of a popular Kaiser Chiefs song.
If you’re struggling to get a good phone signal today it could be because of work on the local network.
Engineers from two mobile phone networks are working on equipment in the Petersfield area today.
It means that if you’re on the O2 or Vodafone networks you may have a reduced signal while maintenance is done on a mast near Harting.
Other phone companies affected include giffgaff, Lycamobile, Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile. The work should be completed by 6 o’clock.
Two local golf courses are open this week: Old Thorns, in Liphook, and Petersfield Golf Club, in Steep.
You should book your tee times in advance on the Old Thorns website and if you’re playing a two-ball with someone from another household remember to travel in separate cars and stay two metres apart at all times.
Meanwhile, here in Petersfield, members of Petersfield Golf Club can book to play between 7.30am and 3.30pm every day. The same social distancing rules apply and you must arrive 20 minutes before your tee-time.
Now it’s time to catch up with the latest lockdown diary of 13-year-old Nina Vennis, who is preparing to return to school, while being shocked at what she can see in the USA.

White Rose garage reopens today, while WH Smith is scheduled to open a week today. And, on the 15th, you can expect the doors to swing open at the Petersfield bookshop; Majestic WIne, in Station Road; as well as several shops in the Folly Market.
We have an update from Tony and Claire, at the Harrow Inn. Tony’s flowers are now outside the pub for purchase and if you have any plants you’d like to contribute, please bring them to the pub. They’d like to say thanks to everyone who has donated some so far. All money from plant and flower sales goes to the Rosemary Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support. Tony and Claire have already raised an impressive £3,000 so far this year with your help.
The annual Dementia Festival – held by East Hampshire District Council and Dementia Friendly Petersfield – that was scheduled to take place this month has been postponed to May 2021.
It was originally going to be postponed until September, but owing to the nature of the event and with the wellbeing of residents and attendees the top priority, it was decided the safest option was to hold it next year.

Now this one is definitely for our colleagues Joff Lacey and Dave Bowers: apparently, this Friday – June 5th – is both national fish and chip day AND national doughnut day. Heaven knows what those two will be scoffing!
Our good friends at Meon Valley Travel, in the High Street, plan to reopen the branch on June 15; but ahead of that, manager Nicki Lahiri will be with us again on Friday to answer your questions on travel, whether it’s about destinations reopening their borders, travel insurance or recommendations, she will do her best to provide the information you need.

TRAVEL
Hampshire County Council’s drainage work in Stroud [StrOOd] along the A272 Winchester Road should be completed tomorrow. Until then, traffic control is in operation.
Drainage repairs also continue on Bell Hill until tomorrow, where traffic control is also in place.
The county council has contractors working to erect two signs at the petrol station on Ramshill today, but delays should be negligible. And BT is scheduled to start work in Rival Moor Rd, with traffic control in operation.
And tomorrow, West Sussex County Council starts carriageway work from Killarney to Goose Green Road, in West Harting and delays are anticipated.

Today’s shaping up to be another warm one with a maximum temperature of 24°C, although fair-weather cloud may develop during the afternoon.
